Designer (Multimedia), Te Ara – The Encyclopedia of New Zealand
Full-time - Fixed term (Parental leave cover)

Te Ara is looking for a designer to join their dynamic design team. The position is full time, fixed term for three months to cover parental leave, but may be extended beyond that time.
Te Ara – The Encyclopedia of New Zealand is an award winning website produced by the Ministry for Culture and Heritage. It is published both on the internet and in print. Te Ara is a comprehensive guide to the peoples, natural environment, history, culture, and social development of New Zealand. It includes images, sounds, film clips, maps and original documents. Te Ara’s users span school students working on projects through to academics doing advanced research.
As a designer, you will be involved with both the creation of new content and the preparation of existing content for the web. The role will involve:
- touching up photos and optimising them for the web
- editing and optimising audio and video for the web
- designing diagrams.
Skills required:
- strong design skills
- at minimum, a university-level design degree and preferably some experience in a related field
- an interest in design for education/information design
- the ability to take a complicated brief through to a well designed, intelligible diagram
- experience with design software such as Photoshop and Illustrator
- experience with Adobe Flash and an understanding of video editing and compression would be preferable but not essential.
This is an ideal role for someone who considers themselves a "Jack of all trades". The work is wide-ranging, challenging and rewarding.
