The government is calling for applications under the Regional Museums Policy for Capital Construction Projects for the 2004/05 financial year. Given the governments existing commitments to a number of significant multi-year projects, limited funding is likely to be available for distribution in this funding round. A new scholarship for professionals in the heritage sector was announced this morning by Associate Arts, Culture and Heritage Minister Judith Tizard. The Clark Collection Scholarship has been created by New Zealand financier, art connoisseur and heritage advocate Errol Clark as an opportunity for mid-career heritage and decorative arts professionals to expand their knowledge of built-heritage and decorative arts.

Commercial radio stations exceeded their New Zealand music targets in 2002. Kiwi music made up 15 percent of the commercial radio playlist last year - beating the 13 percent target set under the code. Broadcasting Minister Steve Maharey today released broadcasting statistics collected by the Radio Broadcasters Association under the voluntary code agreed to by commercial broadcasters in March 2002. Broadcasters are working towards a 20 percent contemporary New Zealand music target by 2006.

NZ Flags to be flown at half-mast on 18-20 October
At the request of the Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage, the Rt Hon Helen Clark, the New Zealand Flag is to be flown at half-mast on all Government buildings from Friday 18 October to Sunday 20 October 2002 as a mark of respect to and in remembrance of all who perished in last weekend's bombing on Bali. This instruction applies to all Government Departments, buildings, and naval vessels which have flag poles and normally fly the New Zealand Flag. Those Government Departments, buildings and naval vessels which do not normally fly the New Zealand Flag on weekends are not required to do so. The Prime Minister today set out further government initiatives to mark the Golden Jubilee of the Queen's Accession to the Throne. 'The government has already taken the opportunity to acknowledge the Jubilee when the Queen was in New Zealand in February. The Queen was at that time presented with a gift from the government and people of New Zealand of the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography and the New Zealand Historical Atlas....The Ministry for Culture and Heritage has an online exhibition on the 1953-54 visit on its www.nzhistory.net.nz website. The memories of the royal visit submitted by New Zealanders for the website exhibition indicate that visit's importance for many people.'

Budget 2002 Funding boost for television programming
The Budget will increase the funding available to television broadcasting in New Zealand by a total of $18 million (GST inclusive) per annum, Broadcasting Minister Marian Hobbs announced today. TVNZ will receive $12 million a year to meet costs associated with implementing the new charter.

The Lord of the Rings scoping study points to lasting effects for New Zealand
The study, released today, was undertaken for the New Zealand Film Commission by the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research Inc. The NZIER uses three scenarios for possible film industry growth resulting from The Lord Of The Rings. The most optimistic is for a possible takeoff of film entrepreneurial activity with $122million per annum in average additional production financing. 'The making of this trilogy entirely in New Zealand shows that film is a high-tech industry that can deliver an enormous amount of prosperity to the nation,' says Judith Tizard. Ministers delighted with wartime memories campaign
The campaign, Lest We Forget, was launched in February by Prime Minister and Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage Helen Clark. Today Marian Hobbs, Minister Responsible for the National Library, Judith Tizard, Associate Arts, Culture and Heritage Minister, and Dr Jock Phillips, Chief Historian with the Ministry for Culture and Heritage which is co-ordinating the campaign, deposited the treasures with Philip Rainer, Deputy Chief Librarian at the Alexander Turnbull Library. These include a letter written in 1865 from a soldier in the Waikato War to his wife, a memoir of a WWI soldier and leaflets dropped over France and Germany in 1941. Online version of Dictionary of NZ Biography
Prime Minister and Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage Helen Clark this evening launched the online Dictionary of New Zealand Biography, saying it increases the availability of a major historical resource to many New Zealanders.
