Grants to Publishers Scheme FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
How much can I apply for?
Look at the recent awards. We seldom have more to give out than $15,000 in each round, and we usually give $1,500-$3,000 per book. This scheme is designed to help publishers with scholarly, short-run books, not lavish coffee-table volumes.
What are your priorities?
You can write about political, social, gender, race relations, military, business or almost any type of history.
The quality of research, writing and historical analysis are paramount. We are interested in original thinking and writing, especially if the manuscript makes a significant contribution to an aspect (or aspects) of New Zealand’s story or of its place in the world.
We especially welcome collections of historical essays; or manuscripts that examine the history of state activity.
We also consider historical biographies, but as a lower priority.
What about local history?
We have supported the occasional, very exceptional local history, but they are better catered for by the Lotteries Environment and Heritage Committee, administered by the Department of Internal Affairs. It has more funding rounds each year, so your chances are greater.
Can I apply if I am publishing the book myself?
Yes. But please remember the priorities set out above and that we do not support elaborate production values.
What if the manuscript isn't complete?
Don’t send it. Although we do not mind if the manuscript is unedited, we require complete manuscripts (and that includes endnotes and bibliographies).
In what form shall I send the manuscript?
A paper copy, please, preferably unbound on simple sheets of A5.
What about fiction?
No. Our fund is for history. Try Creative New Zealand: http://www.creativenz.govt.nz
What if the book has been published or is about to go to the printer?
Forget it. We don’t fund publications retrospectively, nor will we support a book that is published between the date of application and our decision being announced.
How long will it be before I find out if I've been successful?
We will send you a letter, and if successful, a cheque, in early June or early December.
Who decided whether or not I get a grant?
A committee of historians.
