The Heritage Operations unit protects and promotes New Zealand’s heritage. The unit regulates the trade and export of Maori artifacts and other protected objects, protects symbols of national identity (such as the flag and national anthems), provides funding for communities to commemorate Waitangi Day, assists art galleries and museums to host touring exhibitions, maintains war graves, historic graves and national monuments both here and overseas and manages memorial projects such as the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior. It also acts as agent for the Commonwealth War Graves Commission in New Zealand and the South Pacific.
